Charismatic duo Alexandru Tomescu (violin) and Angela Drăghicescu (piano) debut on Liverpool’s St. George Hall Concert Hall stage with an homage to the unforgettable pianist and composer Dinu Lipatti, 100 years since his birth. Born in Bucharest, Romania, pianist and composer Dinu Lipatti (1917-1950) is regarded as one of the greatest pianists of the 20th century, having fulfilled a startling variety of roles – as pianist, composer, teacher and critic – with tireless devotion and integrity, despite the early and relentless encroachment of the cancer that took his life unexpectedly. The peak of the program, featuring rarely performed pieces by George Enescu, as well as several other musical gems by Elgar, Olah, and Bartok, is Lipatti’s Sonatina for violin and piano, a brilliant piece that demonstrates the tragic musician’s outstanding skills as composer.
